After automatic and semiautomatic firearms were invented in the late 1800s, the search for an alternative to black powder intensified. Several smokeless powders were also called nitro powders because their base ingredient was a derivative of nitroglycerin.
Remington Arms, America's oldest gunmaker, was founded in 1816 in Ilion Gulch, N.Y. Founder Eliphalet Remington II started the gun manufacture business after he claimed second place in a shooting contest with his handmade flintlock rifle. In 1865, E. Remington & Sons was incorporated and succeeding in the develop of the first hammerless solid breech repeating shotgun, first hammerless auto-loading shotgun, first successful high-power slide action repeating rifle and first lock breach auto-loading rifle. In 1912, after merging with Union Metallic Cartridge Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut, the company was renamed Remington U.M.C. The new company developed the first paper shotshells and first cartridges for automatic pistols.
