One of the rarest areas of Winchester collectables to collect is the Winchester supplemental Chambers. They where Patented in 1899 made of nickel steel/stainless steel and I have seen advertisements as late as the 1940's offering them for sale. I have a small pamphlet printed in 1906 (I beleive) That I will include with every listing. You can see a photo of it in the pictures. A "Supplemental Chamber" is a cartridge adapter allowing a 32 S & W, 32 Short Colt, (and I have used many times in my 30-06, a 32 auto) to be inserted and fired in a 30-06 rifle, for instance. To my knowledge Winchester only made 9 or these for general sale (I have seen and believe I have some made for testing other than the above 9). The above mentioned pamphlet lists 8 and is missing the 30-06 which came out shortly after the pamphlet was printed. Adapters were made for the .30 Winchester (30 WCF or 30-30), .30 Army (30-40 Krag), .303 Savage, .303 British, .32 W. S. (.32 Winchester Special), .32-40, .35 Win., .405 W. C. F. (.405 Winchester), and of course the already mentioned 30-06 or otherwise called the .30 Gov. I have seen at least 2 different identification stampings on a few of these calibers, so it is possible to collect variations as well. In my experiance the rarest is the 35 Win. which I have only ever owned one. Then the 405 Win. which I have owned 3, the .30 Army, 303 British and 30 Gov, 30-40, 30-30, and the most common seem to be the 32 special and the 303 Savage. With single chamber prices ranging from 0 down to or so each depending on caliber and condition.
They are the slickest things. I have a pre 64 Winchester 30-06 and have used one of these adapters for decades. Put a 32 S&W short cartridge in the chamber/adapter, slide that into the rifles own chamber, fire and extract. The sound is very quite because of the long rifle barrel and mine has proven to be very accurate at surprising distances. Great for taking small game while big game hunting without making much noise.
Well at any rate very few people today have ever even heard of them let alone seen one or a box of them. The boxes of 6 chambers each, were sold to dealers who in turn retailed them one at a time. I have searched high and low for these for decades and accumulated a pretty good collection. Last winter I sold most of my collection and these listings are the last of it.
